TBN,20/02/24: When the sand mafia allegedly tried to run a Hyva truck over a group of mining officers on Saturday night as they were enforcing laws against the illicit transportation of sand close to Pratap Nagari, the officials barely escaped.
According to sources, at around 2.50 am, seven or eight representatives from the State Level Enforcement Squad (SLES) and the Mining Circle Office in Cuttack were conducting a check against the illegal transportation of sand on NH-16 when they noticed a Hyva truck loaded with sand and registered with the licence plate OD-18-C-2097 approaching them.
The driver allegedly ignored the officials’ signals to halt so they could verify the documents in the truck and instead struck the nearby office Bolero car with the intention of killing the drivers. But as the authorities were positioned a short ways away, they were spared. The truck driver ran away from the scene after hitting the car.

This sand-filled truck was approaching the team, who had already detained two Hyva trucks and were conducting additional checks, according to Dillip Kumar Sahoo, Deputy Director of Mines, Cuttack Circle. “The motorist fled after hitting our car and partially damaged it. In this regard, mining officer Sambit Sahoo reported the owner and driver of the Hyva vehicle to the Cuttack Sadar police in a formal complaint.
He claimed that upon their capture, the ghat from which the car was delivering sand will be identified and the relevant lessee would be held accountable.
