Bhubaneswar, Jan 2: The Odisha government has planned to go strict against the vehicle drivers who are caught in the state driving under the influence of alcohol. Seeing the rising number of road accidents due to drunk driving, the Odisha Commerce and Transport Department planned to go strong against the drunken drivers.
In a recent communication to all the Regional Transport Officers (RTOs), the department has asked to strictly adhere to the department orders. The deartment has now supplied the RTOs with the copies of the recommendations of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety which ask for mandatory suspension of driving licences in cases of drunken driving and other serious traffic offences.
The transport department has also fired salvos against the erring RTOs and asked them why they did not fully suspended the DLs of persons caught in drunken driving cases after the police forwarded such cases to them. The department in a letter has now also asked them mandatory suspend the licences from such errant.
In the letter to the RTOs, it is said, ““…as per the directions of the Committee on Road Safety you are directed to take steps for the 100 per cent suspension of the DLs against the drunken driving cases detected by you and forwarded by the police. You are also directed to furnish the reasons for not suspending the DLs forwarded by the police for suspension.”
The State Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera also cautioned the people in the state against this traffic offence. “Many of the road accidents are now reported from the state due to drunken driving. We want to curb this. We also want to give adequate facilities to ensure lesser road accidents. We want to reduce the road accident case by 20 per cent in next one year.”
